o If you have visited a doctor or obtained any blood draws the procedure to obtain IV access is very similar. Our highly trained Registered Nurses use standard procedure of assessing and securing access by utilizing small needles. Topical lidocaine is often used to help make the experience more comfortable. There may be minimal bruising and tenderness at the insertion site. Once infusion has been completed the plastic catheter will be removed, and a band aid will be placed. We recommend resuming normal activity and monitor the site. It is rare, but should you see the band aid saturate with blood, grab a tissue, and apply pressure until the bleeding stops.
o Our trained nurses will review your arms and hands to determine the best area to attempt the insertion of the IV. Patients known to be “hard sticks” tend to have small veins that are deeper in the tissue. It is not guaranteed that we will be able to obtain access, but we will do our best and explain the process step by step. The staff is also trained to use vein finders as well as smaller needles to assist in securing difficult IV’s.
